LOCAL HEROES
was a Millennium-funded festival that took place in Mid-Argyll during the summer of 2000, managed by MACCA (Mid-Argyll Community Care Association)
Local heroes was a series of projects with all sections of the local community in the area around Lochgilphead, Argyll. The projects ranged from local history to contemporary media, and included most artforms. As part of the festival, each project was recorded on video.

The Wild Women Group undertook a number of visual arts encounters during a weekend at Dunans Outdoor Centre, including an exhibition of slide projections on curtains, clothing and shifting screens
The Calligraphy Group explored their chosen craft through coloured inks

The Great Auks Group drew inspiration from the prehistoric roots of Kilmartin Glen, making and playing their own drums made with deer skin and ash wood.

Others chose to explore how coracles could have been made from birch, hazel and willow, covered with hide. Instead of hide, a more contemporary waterproof material was used.

These and following images are a selection to give a flavour of how local people searched for the hero inside themselves, from May to October 2000

The project was supported by Argyll and Bute Council.
Festival organisers were Rev. Roy Flatt and Tricia Grey.
Festival Co-ordinators were Margo Winning and Jeannie Holles.
