Northern Print,
Newcastle-upon-Tyne
EUNICE ROUTLEDGE
After a highly successful opening
show introducing the North East to the variety and
diversity of contemporary printmaking, Northern Print
is set to take a closer look at the work of several
talented regional artists this spring, with a new
exhibition running until March 4th at the Ouseburn
Valley location.
In the main gallery area will be
'Shore', a series of monoprints and etchings by Eunice
Routledge. Eunice is an active member of Northern
Print who - though based in County Durham - has exhibited
widely around the region and as far afield as Korea
and Japan . In her latest body of work, Routledge
is inspired by the rugged North East coastline and
many of her seascapes in Shore seek to evoke the interplay
of light and reflections on water as well as commenting
on what she sees as the parallel relationship between
the action of printmaking and the processes that take
place on a beach.
Another regional member artist, Sara
Ogilvie, will be showing in the second gallery space
with 'Tobacciana', a series of screen prints inspired
by the historical associations and symbolisms of the
act of smoking.
Alongside these prints Northern Print
will be exhibiting work by two young artistic innovators
who explore the different mediums and textures where
print can be applied. Josie Brookes (24) of Heaton,
and Bronwen Deane (30) of Newcastle, work in leather
and silver respectively, which they transform through
use of print into beautiful wearable artworks. Josie's
company Prod sells brightly coloured leather belts
and accessories, produced in part at Northern Print,
which are notable for their distinctive graphic designs
and recently proved a sell out hit at this year's
Edinburgh festival. Bronwen similarly combines traditional
silverworking techniques with experimental acrylic
methods, which - coupled with kitsch images from the
1950s and 60s - create unique ranges of imaginative
jewellery.
All works on show are available for
purchase, and the gallery participates in Art Council
England's 'Own Art' scheme meaning interest free loans
are available to help potential art buyers.
In addition to viewing the latest
exhibition, visitors to Northern Print can explore
the region's finest printmaking facilities, with an
extensive programme of classes and courses and catering
for both beginner and experienced printmakers as well
as children and school groups.
