Artistic Director

The ‘Down Your Way' reminiscence project aims to celebrate Castle Vale's transformation through an intergenerational music project working with Castle Vale residents across 3 generations.

The project will work with the community of Castle Vale to uncover the heritage of the estate and that of its older and longer-term residents. It will involve young people from a local secondary and primary school, as well as local youth clubs in collecting the oral histories community residents, including people living in sheltered/supported housing.

Utilising these oral histories, and previous work created about Castle Vale, the Artistic Director will be commissioned to work together with intergenerational participants to create a music work expressing the heritage of Castle Vale and its residents, using participants' lyrical, thematic and musical contributions inspired by the oral histories.

The project will be delivered from June/July 08, with the main participatory activity taking place from August/September 08. The first exhibition and performance of the commission is planned for April 09. Additional outreach work and exhibitions/performances will then take place through to October 09 with the final evaluation and dissemination of outcomes planned for completion by March 2010.

The Role:

Sound It Out is seeking to appoint a highly experienced and respected Artistic Director for this project. The person appointed will have experience of using heritage items (or similar other visual and audio tools) for inspiration for musical devising and will also need experience of exhibition/multi-art form showcase development. They will be able to establish a creative, inspiring and positive environment, facilitating musical devising activities with intergenerational community groups, some of whom may have little musical experience, across a range of musical styles. In addition, they will need to have experience of observing other professional artists and giving constructive feedback and direction.

The Artistic Director will be responsible for overseeing the development of the heritage and music project, ensuring that the musical devising is inspired by and showcases the heritage of Castle Vale, increasing community involvement and understanding of the heritage of the estate. In addition they will oversee the development of the project material and outcomes into one artistic vision for the showcase exhibitions/performances, ensuring that these are accessible and achieving the project vision in using music to engage the community in their heritage, improving understanding between generations and looking to the future for the estate.

Fee: £11,000 (t.b.c.)

You will have significant experience of commissioning artists in the public realm and will be responsible for managing staff and projects, preparing tenders, and promoting our services to private and public sector clients.

Project Manager – Public Realm (from £22k).

You will have a degree and some experience in a built environment field (e.g. urban design, planning) and will be responsible for a range projects including design training, community engagement, and regeneration.

Are you looking to further your journalistic skills and experience within a creative and supportive environment?

Would you like to gain national experience and exposure for your future career?

Artswork is an independent youth arts development agency committed to developing creative opportunities for young people aged 12-25. We are seeking enthusiastic individuals keen to develop their journalism experience by supporting the delivery of UPSTART ONLINE - the UK's only youth arts specific magazine, produced monthly as part of the English National Youth Arts Network (ENYAN), available to Full Subscribers at www.enyan.co.uk.

Working alongside the Director and Assistant Director you will be involved in interviews, marketing and promotion, photography, research, writing articles, editing, project management and maintaining a web-based magazine amongst other things.

You will also have the opportunity to network and expand your knowledge of the youth arts sector across England, as well as journalism, creative writing and promotion.

Hours are flexible, and commitment can range from anywhere between 3 - 12mths.

You must be able to offer a minimum of one day a month for three months. You will be based within our staff team at our office in Southampton. Full support and training will be given. Previous experience is beneficial but not essential. You will be enthusiastic and committed, with strong communication skills, especially written.

Artswork has run a successful, growing programme of internships across all areas of youth arts for several years.

We are also able to offer informal advice on CV and application writing and interview techniques as appropriate. Almost 100% of previous volunteers and interns have left Artswork to progress into full time employment within the creative industries.
